Hey Columbus, Danyel Morgan is back!

After leaving in 2000 to play with Robert Randolph andthe Family Band, this Columbus native is back to share his latest solo project, "All of Me." This Sunday, March 18^th at The Basement, youcan hear this amazingly talented musician and his funktastic band unveil their new album,but let’s back up real quick – just who is Danyel Morgan?

As previously mentioned, Danyel was raised in Columbus, Ohio. Beginningas a self taught bassist and vocalist, he has gone on to write and co-write GrammyAward winning singles in both 2003 and2004. The latter of the two award winners, a song titled ‘Squeeze,’ demonstrates his ridiculous musical ability and outrageous slap-bass style.

The first time I saw him play live, I had to do a double-take. The dude rocks a 7-string bass – A 7-STRING BASS! If that means nothingto you, go ahead and Google image search “bass guitar,” and count the tuningknobs … yeah, most have four, some maybe even five, and a few cherished basseshave six; but this guy has seven (take that SpinalTap), and he rocks every one of 'em.

If I had a sweetheart, I probably would have lost him in the sea of frolicking hipsters at last month's Sweetheart Dance. Waves of leaps and bounds rolled through 400 W. Rich St. with purpose; dance your sweet, loving heart's out. If you came to this show alone, you eventually forgot about how pathetic you felt while parking your car in the snow covered grass lot, trying not to slip on the occasional patches of ice on your way in. If you came to this show alone, you eventually found yourself lost in love with not just one, but four. The DewDroppers tend to sneak up behind you, wrap their collective, eight arms around your hips, and twist your body until you've completely mastered the Lindy Hop.

Love at first sight. That was my immediate impression of the quirky, swinging quartet. What's not to love? Mamma Madison finger banged the keys with speed and accuracy while belting vocals that often dipped so low they morphed into a raspy, whisper of sweet nothings. Joe Gilliand unsuspectingly strummed my pain with his fingers and sung the story of my life with his song. The continuous whip of drummer, Adam Nedrow's hair was like a metronome that kept a triple step in the hundreds of dancing shoes getting down on the kind of boogie that you can't find anywhere else in Columbus. Turning the performance into a black-tie affair with his smooth, elegant, bass transitions was Michael Kohn (who, by the way, had some serious, snappy, mellow appeal).

My initial thought was that The Dewdroppers must be comprised of classically trained musicians who just happen to be keen on hipster vibes and dirty, yet, somewhat rehabilitated warehouses. I dug a little deeper into their history and found myself even more impressed than I had been, by the fact that their seemingly flawless, and hot-damn-stylistic approach to song compilation and execution is academically untouched. These babes are oh so naturally raw in talent and emotion.

Mamma moved to Columbus with no intention of playing music at all. Any musician knows you can put the melodies on hold for awhile but music is like an addiction. Eventually you're going to get that itch. Lucky for us, Madison checked out of her self-contained rehab early enough to hit up an open mic. Her drug of choice was the piano, so, she chose the guitar to keep it safe. Open Mic night fostered the initial meet and greet of Gilliand and Madison. It wasn't until Madison was invited to sing a song with Gilliand's band, the Tree Surgeon, did he find out that she could actually play the piano. "You play the piano?" Mamma recalls the look of confusion on Joe's face. "Until this point I had been playing guitar to hide any musical talent I had", she said.

After a seven hour writing session which produced the Dewdroppers' first official song, 'Sweep,' Joe and Mamma were musically stuck like glue. Drummer, Adam Nedrow, was invited to join the band and played his first official show with them at Comfest of 2010. A year or so later, Kohn was being asked on a pretty regularly basis to sit in on their performances. According to Madison she thought it was "dumb that he wasn't just in the band" I mean, "he even showed up to a show in suspenders."

They're all officially together now. I'd be a polygamist if it meant I could join them too. The Dewdroppers made a serious impression on me. Clearly. You want to hear something that's gonna make you reconsider what the Columbus music scene has to offer? Check out The Dewdroppers on Facebook and Bandcamp to hear some of their stuff. I highly recommend the tunes, 'Anything' and 'Rosaline'. If you find that a listen is just not enough, and you will, be sure to make it out to one of their upcoming shows; but remember to bring a pair of dancing shoes and some UV shades ... you will be dancing with, and certainly seeing, stars.

JUST ANOTHER THURSDAY NIGHT IN COLUMBUS…

Most would think of the weekend as the prime time for catching happening events around most cities… but this is Columbus. Any seasoned vet of this city knows that there is something happening damn near every night of the week – ‘there ain’t no rest for the wicked’ as some might contend… and this week is no exception.

While some may precautiously pack-it-in, as it is just another weeknight; an absolute onslaught of shows are cuing the lights, checking the sound, and drawing crowds of the scattered few ambitious and devoted souls yearning for live entertainment. All over town, from Clintonville, to German Village (and surely outside of their reaches), some of the best shows are happening, perhaps without you even noticing. If you could spare a moment, allow me to take you on a magic carpet ride through ONE night in this fabulous city …

My night began at Via Vecchia, just south of Livingston Avenue and right off of South Front Street. Being my first time here, I was amazed at this classic German Village venue that has a very rustic vibe, and oozes aesthetics. Aside from hosting a winery, this venue held a number of eye-catching paintings in addition to the night’s line-up of: Bitchin’ Heat, Matthew Franklin (of Cadaver Dogs), and Forest & the Evergreens.

Just a hop-and-a-skip away, and we’re at Carabar for the Psychic Wheels, Sundown, and Uncle Bad Touch show. To be honest, I rarely get down to the German Village and Olde Town East areas of town, but the scene never fails. In my mind, Carabar is the dirty, grungy epitome of what a rock venue should be (and actually, it’s not very dirty at all – but play along). Plus, how can you not help but love a place with a checkerboard dance floor?

Psychic Wheels

While the music is fantastic, I just love getting out. It has so much to offer – not much beats unexpectedly running into friends, and the random conversations that commence while awaiting the preamble sounds of the band. When that time eventually came, my ears got psychotically rocked by true retro-rock, and for that, I thank you Psychic Wheels…

In the heart of it all, just off 5th and High Street, sits Circus, and their wicked show featuring Maza Blaska, The George Elliot Underground, and Hollis Brown (New York). Any rock fan would melt for this show, as every act is solid from beginning to end. While I only have heard some of Hollis Brown (which I liked), I know you can place a safe bet that any show featuring GEU or Maza is well worth the cover. Anytime I’m lucky enough to catch Maza Blaska, I find myself mesmerized in their elaborate melodies – just, trust me, it sounds way better than I could ever describe …

Tempted @ Ruby Tuesday

G. Finesse and the NS @ Scarlet & Grey Cafe

In the Campus-region you can find the funk and hip-hop stops at Ruby Tuesday (Summit and 19th Ave) featuring Tempted, and also Scarlet & Grey Café (High Street and Norwich) hosting G. Finesse & the NS w/ DJ Abyss. Both shows are loaded with loud drums, funky bass and guitar, blaring horns, and rhythmically-gifted emcees. Luckily I have no problem venue-hopping, otherwise, I’d miss one of these great shows…

Think I’m done? Wrong.

Up north at Ace of Cups, the Writers’ Harvest 2o12 is goin down. In benefit for the Mid-Ohio Foodbank, the OSU/MFA Writer’s Guild hosted a night of music, poets, and of course, writers (some of the attendees fit into all three categories). With raffles, auctions, and proceeds benefiting a great organization like the Mid-Ohio Foodbank, this event offered not only fun times, but also good karma.

Well, we’ve covered a nice little stretch of town in tonight’s quest. Sadly, I am not a rock star, or billionaire, so I must call it a night and get to bed so I can work tomorrow (at 6 am), but I’m more than pleased with the evening’s festivities. I am sure that I’ve missed several shows at a number of great venues throughout the city, but to go on would only exacerbate the point that I am hoping to have already made by this point – so, so, so much is happening in Columbus … and this was on a THURSDAY night.

ARTIST PROFILES: CRAIG JAMES & FRIENDS

It takes a lot for a person to be able to stand in front of a crowd with nothing but an acoustic guitar and some vocal chords to keep the audience entertained. It takes a lot to be all alone up there. But lately, more and more of these characters have been popping up in our fine capital city. One such man, Craig James, has been making it easier for these troubadours to gather - specifically, on the third Sunday of every month.

Last month marked the one year anniversary of Craig James and Friends at the Shrunken Head, and I was honored to be there. According to James, the idea originated back when there was such a gathering on the fourth Sunday of every month at Hal and Al’s, as well as another at the Shrunken Head on the second Sunday. By convention, James’ own monthly gathering ended up falling on the third.

While there are often many singer-songwriters and acoustic acts, such as can be seen at weekly open mics, there is quite a difference. For one, James hand-picks the acts, there is no sign up list. Also, he usually caps the night off with a bigger, louder act, like a full band. In the year history, Post Coma Network and The Glance have ended the night, and many other local musicians have taken part in the acoustic section of the evening: Jason Dutton (Audrey & Orwell), Matt Monta, Joey Hebdo, Andy Gallagher (Trains Across the Sea), Andrew Graham (Swarming Branch) and many others.

Given that it’s his shindig, every month James gracefully opens the night out and plays first. His scratchy, but soulful voice that cuts to the bone paired with his folksy six-string strumming set him apart from almost any other local singer-songwriter I’ve seen. He’ll sing you tales of woe and you’ll wish you could understand the depth of his material - all this from a man who is by far one of the warmest, kindest people around. The other acts may come and go monthly, but James remains.

This isn’t the type of show you’d expect from, say, a Friday or Saturday night. It’s a lot like a relaxed meeting of friends on a Sunday evening, usually starting around 6 to showcase new songs and performers. To build a functioning society, it’s required to work as a team, or friends. In this context, to build a bustling music scene, we can’t be cutting each other off or putting our noses in the air when someone new bares their soul to you via musical reverberations in the air. Instead, we all have to work as a team and support each other, the type of thing that James does monthly.

So I say to you, all are welcome to stop by Craig James and Friends at the Shrunken Head. I personally have been to the majority of the past 12, and try to make it there every time I’m able. The very title of the event has the word “friends” in it. How could anyone possibly turn that down?

ARTIST PROFILES: DIRTY CURRENT

Jack-in-the-box, Vintage Versace, GI Joe, Carebears, and, techno. I know it doesn't really seem like any of this stuff would have any reason to be in the same room together, albeit storage containment, but these closeted items have more in common than their eventual basement/attic destinations; Revival. Columbus, say hello once again to electronic music.

This body-moving, chest-pulsing, electrifying music is making a huge comeback. Quite right! I've never been the type to walk away from a nerve bending, spine curling bass line. In fact, I gravitate towards it like it's some innate, primal relationship that I'll never get rid of, nor do I want to. Standing off to the side of the room, surely next to a bar, I'll watch the energy of a crowd who waits in anticipation for the next, calculated mix. Finding myself a little closer to the stage and further deep into my cocktail I'll lightly sway through the slow, limbic break in beat before the drop detonates an explosion in my brain stem.

Shrapnel confetti makes it's descent down the back of my neck, and this is usually the part where I'll feel forced to dance like it's the only thing that's going to save my life. Well, consider my life saved. I may be dirty. I may be a hot mess. But at least I'm alive. Today, the Columbus electronic music scene seems to be following a trend; dirty makes it worth it. Determined to leave some digital debris all over this city, is Dirty Current.

The undisciplined, electronic duo spits dark, heavy, industrial techno and electro out of their fingertips with such provocative attraction you tend to forget the social faux pas and beg to be spit on. Conner and Marko met a few years ago through mutual friends while shuffling through iPod playlists, discovering a similar taste in music. Nearly a years worth of weekend house parties, a mixer and two tower speakers later, Dirty Current can successfully add their name to the best that Columbus has to offer in it's electronic music scene.

Electronic music is more than just a mixer. It's bigger than a pair of technics. It's beyond the wires, the headphones, the accompanying show lights, glow-sticks, and organically orchestrated dance circles. There is a person behind the digital noise. There is a kind of cerebral depth that can only come from the collaboration between human and machine.

The idea is to use the limitless possibilities of sound to create and combine something that is more complex and far less understood than what most people might consider "music". "Technology and music have always gone hand-in-hand. I really don't see a synthesizer or even a computer to be any less "real" as an instrument than an acoustic guitar" (Conner Campassi). The flexibility of sound in electronic music allows for greater artistic fluidity. "Generally, our sound is always changing, and hopefully always will be. I think as we mature and our taste in music changes, then so does what we make and play out" (Conner Campassi). With a new EP in the works, the duo tends to be leaning toward more industrial, percussive techno and noisy elements. Dirty Current has no intention of keeping their hands clean. The pair expect to take on a new DIY back alley party early spring. Having been given the opportunity to play out in local venues such as the Newport, Axis, Circus, Skully's, and Double Happiness, they're ready to show this city what it means to get all kinds of electronic. Ditch the glow-sticks for a hardhat equipped with a headlamp and get ready to road-block the Columbus underground with hard-hitting techno and some major construction.

and considerthis your issued warning: they have an arsenal of songs that will make youscream, shout, smile, and of course, dance. With an old school Motown-y feel, anda ‘Supremes-meets-a groovy, semi-rock-ish kinda sound,’ this band has tappedinto the best of past and present music styles to rekindle that undeniable andinherent need to get up and dance.

AdamScoppa:
The girls just have a knack for writing songs like that. I said one time, “Weshould write a song called ‘Don't Talk Back’,” because Mehgan says that all thetime, and that it should sound kind of Ray Charles-y (in my head I was thinkingalong the lines of “Hit the road Jack”). The next day Lizzy says, “I wrote ‘Don'tTalk Back’ and it has a call and response vocal pattern and an Etta James-styleblues breakdown.” We were just on the same page right away.

The leading lady vocalists (Lizzy Morris and Mehgan Hutchinson)give all new meaning to the phrase “Main Attraction.” They will easily get yourattention, and I’m willing to bet, could keep even the most attention deficientindividuals enamored with songs like, ‘Don’t Talk Back,’ ‘Sweet Baby ‘ and ‘ThisMeans War.’ One is kinda sweet, the other is somewhat spicy, but they both areloaded with soul, and have the pipes to back it up. Oh ya, two more words aboutthese ladies:

So, is it soulful rock? Is it bluesy 60’s funk? Whateverit is, it’s well-balanced. Keyboardist Erica Lyn Sparks and bassist Dan Barnes holddown the driving doo-wop progressions while drummer Adam Scoppa maintainsup-tempo souls beats. Believe me when I say that no one rocks the floor tom[drum] like Scoppa – just go to a show and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Thenthere’s Dennis Tanner on guitar, who apparently can play any genre of musiche pleases with ease. In the past three months, I’ve seen Dennis in three different bands,each sounds completely different, all of which rocked my socks (not an easyfeat) – it’s like getting a box of chocolates, that doesn’t have any nasty onesin it.

Playing in the Regrettes is sort of like being part ofthe Voltron Lion Force. Everyone knows their role in the band and plays itwell. When we unite as a band we are a force to be reckoned with.

Well, I hope you’ve taken this as a learning experience –and walk away with some useful knowledge. Now you can go and to tell yourfriends about this new band that is just emerging onto the local music scene,and only you know about it; and they’ll think you’re super cool. Tell them thatgoing to this show is a super-crazy-sexy-fun-time, and that it’s as good, ifnot better than one can anticipate. They’ll be blown away and ask, “What’s thename of that band again?” Then you should lean over, as if it were a secret,and gently whisper to them, “…the Regrettes.”

WAFFLEPALOOZA

The Shaw brothers are taking fundraising to a tastier level while cementing their stamp all over the Columbus music scene. Fresh homemade waffles and any topping you can dream of, this was the menu last Friday night as The Andy Shaw Band (ASB),threw their annual Wafflepalooza event at Scarlet & Grey Cafe. On this night, they shared the stage with Sound the Word, a hot rock band out of NewYork. Chris Shaw came up with the Wafflepalooza event three years ago as a promotional gig after ASB had been playing at a Ruby Tuesday “Monday session.” Wafflepaloolza was such a success from the beginning, that now, ASB fans regularly ask for a waffle encore.

Andy Shaw, on the Wafflepalooza:

“Chris started Wafflepalooza when we were back at Ruby’s on Monday nights. We were looking for creative, promotional ideas to get people excited and have fun. After you do it week after week, we wanted to do something interesting. We gave free waffles out and it was a smash. It felt right as an event so we kept doing it… We eventually figured out how to make it more fun and successful.”

A number of ASB fans showed up, partied and ate all the waffles they could handle; proving once again the influence and support ASB has built up in Ohio over the last 6 years, both inside 270 and outside of the city limits. Going to see ASB is like being invited to an impromptu, family reunion. It might just be because they are super nice guys,or it might be that in a band of five, where three do share the same last name,it is actually a family affair; and for the record – there was some real life tie-dying present; as well as musical activity cards which allowed the creative crowd the opportunity to color, play and be creative. While the rest of the Wafflepalooza were promotional gigs,this one was an official fundraising event for the ASB.

Currently ASB is raising funds for a musical trip down to Austin, Texas for the annual, “South by Southwest” (SXSW) festival. Along with the “We are Columbus” group, of which Chris and Andy Shaw have helped get started in the last few years, they have decided for this year’s trip to Austin, to rent out a joint so that all of our 614 bands can perform, and in be heard in a professional surrounding.

The first SXSW in 1987 stood out with its eclectic mix of German, Mexican, jazz, blues and rock musical styles. Still today, its goal is to provide creative people a place to showcase their talents on a larger scale. One of their major focuses is giving everyone a chance to share ideas, as well as be able to meet and greet. SXSW gained immediate attention both nationally and internationally, and what started as 700 registries, is now up to around16,000 participants.

Chris Shaw, on favorite things about being a musician:

“Events like this [Wafflepalooza] and SXSW,” with a smile.

During these financially hard times, it seems some of the last people to get paid are the local entertainment folk, but there is a major push for musicians to get paid on a regular basis for their skills. Wafflepalooza is a representation of the innovative ways musicians are looking to go outside of the box to use venues and events in creative ways to get paid.

It is these types of Wafflepalooza or SXSW inspired events that offer bands a fresh platform, as a way to catch a new audience’s attention in a way that wasn’t available in the past. So why no troad trip along through the country with some of your closest friends, and play for a whole new city while making connections which otherwise might never have happened? Sounds pretty rock n’ roll if you ask me.

Life gotcha down? Bummed cause you’re stuck, listening to the same old stuff on the radio (and music library)? Well perhaps you should take a trip to The Energy Clinic. This young foursome can take any drab room (or bar) and quickly fill it with colorful sounds of dreamy melodic progressions.

Their music is kinda like an uptempo-ish rock with groovy and funky twists and turns - Does anyone remember ‘No Doubt?’ Ok, so think old-school ‘No Doubt,’ with early/mid Incubus progressive alternative rockstyles. Now make it really well rounded and polyphonically arranged, and there you have it – the shit is bananas.

The lead singer has an incredible voice with tons ofcharacter and emotion. It wasn’t until I got a copy of their recent recordings that I was able to actually hear the words she is singing in these dance-evoking tunes; and now I realize there’s a lot more going on here than pretty notes and melodies. The girl’s got some shit to say, so listen up.

While you could easily spend a show lost in Steff’s vocals, the true meat and potatoes of the band, in my opinion, are the dudes behind the strings, Sam and Raad. Constantly countering each other’s rhythms and progressions, they create an elaborate, well-woven composition that demonstrates how well they are in-tune with their instruments as well as one another. Which then leaves the drummer, John, a hefty task of syncopations, drops, and tempo changes; but don’t worry, he’s no Ringo – this boy can rockhis drum set, he just doesn’t always try to be as unnecessarily flashy as someother drummers.

The Energy Clinic creates undeniably soul-clutching music, which makes each show an exquisite experience. I truly suggest you find their next show, and pencil yourself in for a musically-induced therapeutic jam session that will re-energize your mind, and probably get your body and soul movin’ (or, mostly likely in your ‘booty’ reigon). The Energy Clinic is a refreshing reminder that in a world of over-produced bullshit, there are still well composed bands with amazingly talented and creative individuals.

ARTIST PROFILES: KARATE COYOTE

Pop music has many faces. The collage of sounds Karate Coyote ties together to produce their signature synthesizer and effect-laden sound is a statement of that fact. They put together different pieces of pop music’s past to create their own original style. From pleasant synth lines to jangly guitar breaks, there are plenty of sounds to keep your ears entertained.

One of the aspects of musicianship that can be easily neglected is working as a team. With a band like this, it could be easy to overplay because of all the different instruments and singers. However, they fill out their individual parts perfectly without interrupting the overall sound.

The rhythm section is tight and neat, with melodic bass lines that tie everything together. The guitar breaks are slick, and the synth lines float tastefully over the choir-like harmonies. Synthesizers can be a slippery slope, plenty of bands easily put layer over layer of synth and muddle down the mix, taking away the focus from other instruments. This is not one of those bands, they know when to use it and when to hold back.

Karate Coyote has been working for quite some time to forge their sound, which now seems to have been fully realized. The 2010 release “Inner Animals,” their debut full length album, is a perfect snapshot of this sound. It seems they’ve carved their niche, as there are really no other bands in town that resemble this eclectic and playful pop-rock group.

The defining feature of Karate Coyote, I think, is their vibrancy. Their music has a certain energy to it that seems unstoppable. It’s like you could dance forever to their music and never feel tired. I suggest you go out to a show, pick up a CD, and remember to bring your dancing shoes.

ARTIST PROFILES: THE GEORGE ELLIOT UNDERGROUND

There are a lot of rock bands in Columbus. Of course, there are only a handful of truly great rock bands in town. Without a doubt, The George Elliot Underground (G.E.U.) is one of them.

From the way they craft dance-floor-ready anthems to their natural rock n’ roll spunk, they basically have all the required ingredients to extend the long standing traditions of rock music. With a bit of Rockabilly in the mix, blaring guitar solos, melodically tight riffs and fancy dance moves, it’s easy to picture them playing in an arena. Their sound is so big that it almost belongs to be played in a large space.

They’ve more or less perfected the art of straight ahead rock. A friend of mine described it perfectly, saying it sounds like “comfort rock,” like comfort food, but for rock bands. Their songs are easily digestible and simply feel good as you’re taking it in. Honestly, The George Elliot Underground sound as if they popped out of the late 70’s and onto a stage in Columbus.

Whatever they’re doing, they’re doing it right. For example, it’s shocking how many of their songs are available for immediate and free download off the Internet. Not every band is like that, a lot of times you have to go through Itunes or Amazon to get a band’s music. It’s nice to see that their music is so easy to obtain.

Going to a George Elliot Underground show is a lot like going to a party. You know the music will be good, the booze will be flowing and it’s generally impossible to have a bad time. It’s incredible that bands like this still exist. Right when everyone starts saying “the 80’s are coming back” or “that band has too many synthesizers,” G.E.U. one ups them all and brings good, old-school rock and roll. Synthesizer free.

Mike Heslop is the backbone of a local café you might have heard of: Kafe Kerouac, (www.kafekerouac.com) the best coffee shop north of Lane Avenue. How did it all come about, and how did such a small place remain open during these harsh financial times? Mike’s answer, “I’m stubborn and I don’t like to give up.” Really, is there any better business plan than that?

After graduating from The Ohio State University, Mike bartended at the airport while playing music and writing on his own time. That is when he got the idea to open a café… but this wouldn’t be the standard coffee shop, instead there would be books, games, records, and beer.

“I had this idea to open a café which would be a place that wasn’t just a coffee shop, but also a bar and bookstore. A place where artists and writers go to hang out, that was the original concept.” –Mike

Mike envisioned a place where everyone would be welcome to hangout, share ideals, ideas and debate. Think of a typical Parisian café gathering spot for artists and writers in the early 20th century; now change that French to English, throw in 50-80 years of progression and what you have is Mike, and Kafe Kerouac. How did the vision become a reality?

The cafe opened in May of 2004, as it took about a year and a half to go from conception to actually being open. Since then, the space has been forever changing and evolving. For instance, after a year they expanded into the room next door, which had been originally used as an extra study and additional storage space.

“The second room provides a muting between the rooms; it’s like a sound proofing. So in the front room people can be reading or studying and the sound of maybe a play next door doesn’t disrupt. Plus you have that great ambiance by having books around. We added track lighting for the stage; we added a larger P.A and bigger mixing board. So now we can offer more, and cater to a bigger audience.” –Mike

What type of crowd will you find at Kafe Kerouac? Just about anyone. You’ll find mostly 20 something grad students working or studying, and the occasional vagabond just passing through. However, what is most noticeable, are Kafe Kerouac’s strong supporters - people will drive across the city regularly to come back and work here. Many customers have developed a strong sense of loyalty, and seem to feel as though they are apart of the coffee shop success.

“We are considered the ‘hipster hangout,’ the disenfranchised middle class white kids who ride up on their bikes with their tight jeans and All Stars. Those people are great but I never meant it to evolve to one group or social group, that wasn’t my vision, I just wanted a mix of people who are looking to express themselves.” –Mike

To succeed in the middle of recession (upon recession) Mike keeps his prices low, buys local and has friends that routinely help out. To some it may feel ‘clique-ish’ but Mike and his employees work hard at trying to make everyone feel welcome. I having been going to Kafe Kerouac since about the time they opened and in that time, I have never felt anything other than welcome.

Mike is not very political, but Kafe Kerouac stands out as a leftist place and so he ends up working as a middle man between heated discussions a lot of the time. It’s a creative way to grow academically, to be surrounded and a part of scholarly conversations.

“Typically coffee shops are known as a meeting place to discuss current issues. I can’t find anywhere else in town that matches the type of intimacy we provide. So after about 5 years it is finally turning into the space I had wanted.” –Mike

It has been a learning experience, but making a lot of money was never the idea. Instead as a place that provides people a platform, Kafe Kerouac has succeeded.

- Wednesday night features poetry slams brought to you by Writers Block.

- Thursday night is Comedy night.
- Local musicians and fundraising groups often use the space on Friday night.

Once a month, Kafe Kerouac has a ‘First Draft Poetry” event, which normally has a theme.

When Mike isn’t behind the counter you may see him onstage with the “Shazzbots” a kids musical group that Mike started out with some friends. They played over 50 shows last year and are on track to put out their 2^nd album in 2012. (www.theshazzbots.com.) A newer project Mike is working on, called the “Black Ties,” is a rotating group of his musician friends. Everyone gets a song list the day of performance and they wing it. It seems as though Mike is like the energy bunny, he just want stop.

Over the years Kafe Kerouac routinely transforms itself to meet the needs of students, artists, musicians, spoken word or live theatrical plays, and the wait was well worth it. What started out as a one room coffee shop with a few desks and comfy over-sized chairs, now presents itself as a living room (set up to the left), books lining the walls and a classic record collection (to your right). This adds to the ambiance Mike strives to create. Inspired by the people who perform, Mike takes their suggestion and is routinely moving furniture, books and records to change the physical scene and to make things a little better and flow more smoothly.

If you are looking for a place to relax, Kafe Kerouac can provide you with that. If you are looking for a place to hold a meeting, Kafe Kerouac can provide you with that. If you want to hear some quality local music and eat some local goodies, Kafe Kerouac can provide you with that. You get the picture. Once a month, Columbus is treated to one of the most sensationally soul-filled dance parties around … ya know what? Scratch that, I’m gonna go ahead and put this one at the top – it is THE most sensationally soul-filled, absolute elation inducing dance party that these two eyes and boney hips have had the pleasure of experiencing.

The party I speak of is called Heatwave (as if you didn’t already know). The title, coming from the 1963’s classic Motown staple by Martha and the Vandellas, is a perfect preface and description of the event. The first Saturday of each month, you can find the walls of Ace of Cups thumpin’ with the sounds of old-school Motown, funk, rock, and all-out timeless 50’s and 60’s classic hits. What could be more awesome than that? Well, all the tunes are on vinyl … you know, those really old dark circular disks that your parents (maybe grandparents) used to have to listen to music, “back in their day?” But I suppose it’s true, it is a far cry away from today’s ipod-ery, we’re talking several generations of music, from a time, long, long ago – before mp3’s, cd’s, tapes, even the infamous 8-track … so show some respect.

Being an old soul, and raised listening to Motown, this party seemed to be created for my own personal enjoyment. Sure, I have several friends that like music from this era, but I was truly blown away to see the kind of turn out this event has spawned. It has now become a regular expectation to find a gaggle of young socialites packed into this party every month. The venue often reaches capacity early into the night, so don’t be surprised (or mad at me) when you show up and have to wait in line to get in.

A wide spectrum of styles are featured throughout the night, not only in music but also in fashion. The ladies are so fine, the fellas are smooth, and the scene is just remarkable, with dapper defining the entirety of the evening. Being surrounded by such great people and additionally dancing to artists like the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, the Four Tops … ugh, it just doesn’t get any better than that.

The creators, organizers, and most importantly DJ’s of this phenomenal event were kind enough to give us some insight into exactly how this great dance party came to be, as well as some of their fond memories, and related thoughts, all for your personal pleasure …

What made you want to put Heatwave together?

ADAM: The three of us got together in a very serendipitous way. I always have had a soft spot for oldies, Motown, and garage rock and started collecting this music on vinyl. I used to spin records between bands at Skully's and noticed that when I put on Martha and the Vandellas or the Animals, for example, people started dancing almost inadvertently. It's always great to hear that music through a loud PA and I thought people would want a dance party geared towards that. I suggested the idea to friends for a long time and everyone said they would be interested in going to something like that. I just needed an extra kick in the ass to get it together, and then I randomly met Ann, who had a grand scheme of her own.

Were you looking to start the next great dance party in Columbus, or were you just trying to spin classic vinyl?

ANN: The boys didn't really know what to expect, I guess, but this dance party in New Orleans [‘ModDance Party’ – see full interview] is absolutely packed every month, so that was what I was aiming for. I figured it would take a while to build up, …. We were originally looking at much smaller venues than Ace of Cups, mainly because we didn't think we would be able to fill a bigger space, and who wants to dance in the middle of an empty room? Dancing should be cozy. We made a massive list of the stuff we wanted to play - basically "If We Don't Have This Song At Our Dance Party, We Will Be Sad" - so to that extent we're motivated by playing the songs we love. But the final verdict on what we play is based on whether or not it makes us want to dance.
CHRIS: I really just wanted to play my John Denver greatest hits record and hit on all the girls who are into The Fleet Foxes. Adam and Ann instead persuaded me to play the other things I had. I think it’s real keen, spiffy, and neat that it worked out that way. I mean, people seem to still think I’m cool… right?

Ace of Cups was getting to capacity after the second Heatwave, did you expect this kind of immediate success?

ADAM: When plans with the other bar fell through, the newly opened Ace of Cups took a chance on hosting it. I had in no way expected that kind of turnout, and when the January party was at capacity it still blew my mind...

ANN: I will say that for the first dance party, we had a decent-sized crowd and eventually they all started dancing, and the boys were like, "This exceeded our wildest expectations." And I said, "This actually was my expectation - like, best-case scenario." But capacity on the second night - that exceeded my wildest expectations. A line out the door? That is crazy…

CHRIS: Honestly, yes and no. I didn’t expect to have immediate success, but I knew with the music that we were preparing to play it was a definite possibility. I remember going to Ace of Cups prior to the first Heatwave to scope it out and I asked Aleks,“What IS capacity, ya know, just in case?” He said, “Um, yeah, don’t worry about that. It won’t happen.”

Do you have any favorite memorable moments from any of the past Heatwaves?
ADAM: The one that sticks out for me is when I played an"encore" song at the second party. People were chanting for more and as I put on the record, everyone erupted in applause simply for the hiss of static at the beginning. I thought that was really cool.

Anything else you want to say to the people?
ADAM: I just want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who turns out - and waits outside in the cold – to share my favorite songs with me. Our party is your party.
ANN: I thought Columbus was a pretty cool town before Heatwave started. But considering that I am perpetually homesick for New Orleans, I am so grateful for the opportunity to play this music that I love - much of which is New Orleans R&B - and to see a roomful of people dancing to it really makes Columbus feel more like home. I'm especially grateful for my friends in the English graduate department at OSU, who've been showing up to Heatwave since the first night. They're amazingly generous and supportive. Plus they let me teach them the Madison. That's not just supportive - that's downright indulgent.

ARTIST PROFILES: NORTHWOOD PROJECT

It blows my mind how many good bands there are in this city. Right when you think you’ve started to get a grasp on what the local music scene has to offer, a scattered mess of instrument aficionados congeal to create a new beastly monster of sound - that is precisely what happened in the case of Northwood Project.

Lets just start with the obvious; when going to a live show, if you see more than 6 people on stage, you can place a safe bet that your ears will be ringing by the time you leave (i.e.- its gonna get loud). Well, this band has nine people … that’s right, I said it – NINE! For the record, that’s a guitarist, a bassist, a trumpet player, a keys player, a few saxophones, a drummer and a power-duo of vocalists that flawlessly blend the strong, soulful voice of Talisha Holmes and the rousing rhymes of Cast the Diety – so basically, take this as your warning: mic’s will be rocked, speakers will be blarring, and the booties will be a-shakin’.

Each song brings immense amounts of intense musical power. I was beside myself just listening to how this group moves with syncopated stops, drops, hits and grooves. What’s more, is how they, like so many other great acts, incorporate a wide variety of genres throughout their performances. While the most apparent style hovers around a very funky sorta hip-hop and R & B-ish vibe, you will quickly find yourself in the middle of a relatively heavy rock progression – I found myself double and triple checking the stage to make sure that it was the same band still playing.

Northwood Project continues the great line of local-based, live-instrument hip-hop groups, with over-flowing talent and creatively composed set lists unlike you’ve ever known to be true [see G. Finesse & the N.S.; the L.E.S. Crew; Stretch Lefty]. It is scary how good this band is, for how little time they’ve spent together. Joe Peppercorn’s Beatles Marathon

Love is an exceedingly complex concept. Yet, the Beatles somehow managed to present it perfectly in their music. Last Thursday at Kobo, Joe Peppercorn’s Beatles Marathon would not have let down any member of the world’s most famous rock band.

The young, the old, and everyone in between showed up to the point that Kobo hit capacity. It was a hot, sweaty, old-school-head-bobbing extravaganza for the ages. The word “packed” doesn’t even begin to describe that night, as a line quickly grew down the block waiting to get in. Indeed, love was present in the air. In fact, a friendly attendee noticed me hunched in a corner, scribbling away in my tiny notebook, and offered me her seat... twice.

The show lasted all day, beginning at 4:30 P.M. and ending when the bar closed. The concept was to play all of the Beatles studio works in one day. It wasn’t only a tribute, but a literal marathon. It was the kind of event where one friend I was talking to said “I’ve been here since 4:30, and I have to go pick up my friend from the airport at 9:30. Then, I’m coming back after that for the rest of the show.” In other words, this was one show not to be missed.

I got there just before the band started Rubber Soul, and needless to say, all the songs sounded great. Blasting through amazing versions of “Day Tripper,” “Norwegian Wood,” and “Nowhere Man,” the songs came complete with the very same vocal harmonies the Beatles used. It’s not even worth it to keep listing specific songs, because they all sounded like the original versions.

The cast of characters Joe Peppercorn put together, from local bands Ghost Shirt and The Whiles, are such serious musicians. They even paid attention to truly replicate the Beatles’sound, including the use of multiple guitar changes and an enormous rack of keyboards and synthesizers.

It’s incredible that the Beatles essentially stopped touring late in their career, ending up spending most oftheir time in the studio, and yet musicians still play their music to this day. The level of noise at Kobo seemed reminiscent of the noisy rooms the band’s performances actually must have taken place in. It just goes to show that music is never ending - that over 40 year safter a band breaks up, people might still come out in droves simply to hear their music. That is the definition of love: An intense feeling of deep affection.

- love and happiness ? … we can only hope Al, …

… one thing’s for sure, there will still be an abundance of great live music in Columbus.

It is getting to be that time of year when it is quite often to take a moment to reflect upon the events of the past year, and/or look forward to the next year; planning, hoping and anticipating what the New Year may bring.

A lot can happen in a year – people moving into or out of the city, bands and artists forming and rising, or inversely breaking up or disbanding. Regardless of the ups and downs, what’s most important is keeping a level perspective … and having fun (at least that’s my opinion). Not to be preachy or imposing, but on behalf of someone who has a friend that is a doctor: you should make it a point to get out and enjoy yourself more often – be goofy, get weird with it, just let go – I think you might find it to be a very productive and effective way to deal with the stresses of life.

As for myself, personally, it has been a terrific year: I had the opportunity to see a plethora of live music (both local and national acts); I had my first Cloudhaus experience (very quickly followed by my second, third and fourth); ridiculous amounts of fun at Comfest, Jazz and Ribfest, Music Week Columbus, and Independent’s Day; found my newest love, Heatwave; met all kinds of amazingly talented and creative people (that I am now lucky enough to call my friends); and got involved with this great movement of illuminating local music (called BusTown Music, don’t know if you’ve heard of it yet, but it’s pretty amazing…)

As for BusTown, the past 10 months have been a wild ride. We have grown into our own, four major audio programs [‘the Evan Oberla Show’, ‘BusTown Jazz & Improv’,‘BusTown Radio’, and ‘Raad Rock Radio’], a multi-dimensional written division [‘Reviews’ and ‘Arts & Community’], and our latest, videos platform (with thanks to our friends at GingerAttack!Video Productions).

Rest assured, people of Columbus, that we at BusTown are working hard, plotting and scheming ways to help strengthen, promote, and provide for the local music scene throughout this next year. 2012 looks to be a big, busy and productive year for BusTown Music.

Sooo, what’s on tap? Well, while many of the details are on the hush-hush, I can tell you to keep an eye out for more BusTown Events (possibly coming to a neighborhood near you), as well as the continuing expansion of our BusTown library of local musicians, artists, venues and organizations via our original BusTown Shows and Articles.

ARTIST PROFILES: DIRTY GIRLS

“I’m going to see Dirty Girls tonight – you wanna come?” The correct answer without a doubt or any hesitation should be a definite and immediate “YES!” Without even knowing what it is or what’s happening – simply having those two words in conjunction equates for what can only be described as the implication of a magnificent adventure.

Fortunately, if you dare venture out to see these dirty, Dirty Girls, your ear holes will be rewarded with a fanciful audial precession of hook-based, high-energy nostalgic rock tunes. Reminiscent of 1960’sretro-Cali surfer-pop rock, this foursome will have you twistin’ and shakin’ all night long, as if you were hangin’ with the gang at the local malt shoppe.

Perhaps it’s because every song they play is so damn catchy – but it can be really easy to get carried away rocking out and not even notice how well their songs are written. The lines jumping out of Jeremy Fina’s bass are abnormally melodic, not only for a bass player, but also a lead singer. Meanwhile, holding down the rest of the band’s merry-making melodies are guitarists Stefan Doke and Dennis Tanner; with Matt Whitslar (drums) providing the rhythmic foundation – keeping everything at a steady up-tempo pace. This group of party boys, known as Dirty Girls, blend their sounds with layers of hooks, riffs and progressions that are seemingly simplistic, yet undeniably enjoyable.

So yes, the cat is out of the bag … Dirty Girls, are actually guys… but come on, the phrase ‘Dirty Guys’ just doesn’t have the same ring, ya know? (plus, its redundant) Nevertheless, go see these guys. They have such an amazing stage presence, and have so much fun on stage that it feels like they are in the crowd partying with you; which just might end up happening … in which case, I suggest you bring your party pants…

'MUSICIANS AGAINST VIOLENCE': Danyel Morgan and The Monsters

Biography
"Unbelievable bass guitarist and singer Danyel Morgan is moving to the next level. Danyel is a self-taught bass guitarist and vocalist from Columbus, Ohio. As a child, Danyel was influenced by his father and began playing the bass with family members and gospel groups at the age of five. The first song he ever played was "Love & Happiness" by Al Green. Danyel also remembers his youthful days listening to his idol Stanley Clarke.

Around 2000, Danyel left Ohio to play and sing along with Warner recording artist Robert Randolph and the Family Band. The band has released two successful albums, which Danyel has either written or co-written and performed vocals on most of the songs including the 2003 Grammy Award-winning song entitled "Blind Boy of Alabama" and the two-time 2004 Grammy nominated song "Squeeze," which is the source music for a video game. The Family Band's Unclassified album won a 2004 Dove Award, and they performed at the 2004 Grammy Awards.

Danyel along with the band has toured the United States and Europe with Dave Matthews, Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, The Neptunes, The Roots, John Mayer and many others. He has been featured on VH1, Conan O'Brien, The Tonight Show, Austin City Limits, The Grammys, MTV and many others.

Danyel has proven to be the show stopper and takes the audience to another level. He was even recruited by Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana to perform as a part of their stage show. Now with so much experience under his belt, Danyel is working on his solo project that he wants and hopes the world will enjoy."

Musicians against violence: The Reggae community honors the life of Leigh

Death is never easy to take. What is easier - knowing its coming, or the sudden shock of it all? Neither if you ask the loved ones left behind.

Woodlands tavern hosted the first of what will be an annual memorial event for Leigh L. Belyn; a fresh faced, happy 18 year old whose life was cut short by tragedy. Leigh, a 2011 New Albany High School graduate on her way to The Ohio State University to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse was murdered at her home August 2011 by her boyfriend Juvon Williams, who was later killed by gunfire by police. Leigh and Juvon had a fight the night before the murder after she declined a marriage proposal and ended their relationship. Williams was being deployed to Afghanistan and wanted to take Leigh with him as his wife. Instead Leigh decided she would take a different path and he ended her life over it.

After Williams came back from basic training and adjusting to the military lifestyle he was a different person- a similar reaction most people have when a loved one returns after such a dramatic lifestyle change. He began driving up to see Leigh every chance he got and the two would spend most of her senior year together, isolated. “What seemed like routine young love appeared more controlling…” said Celeste, Leigh’s mother, after the killing. It were these little patterns of control that Celeste was able to piece together after the tragedy; so that in the future, she hopes to educate parents and their children about early warning signs of control and manipulation that can lead to an abusive relationship.

Reggae music brings people of all walks of life together. So when tragedy struck one of their family members the community rallied around the family and decided to do something about it. It wasn’t just about musicians against violence, but more about people for peace and the promotion of nonviolence. Terri Bob, Leigh’s father is one of the founders of the strong Reggae community in Columbus. As a drummer for the oldest Reggae group in Ohio, The Ark Band, Terri told me that while it was such a beautiful night, filled with such sense of support and family it is merely a temporary band aid for the pain that he feels over his daughter’s death.

In a nation where the norm has become murder and homicide as its top stories of the night, when and how can we make it all stop? The U.S leads the industrialized world in murder and violent crime on a regular basis not by a wave but a tsunami. We buy our children, and sometimes at a very young age, video games based solely on reality stimulated killing and war. We continually allow our government to go to war in the name of democracy and peace around the world, when we have a devastating war going on daily in our homes, neighborhoods and glorified across all aspects of our media driven culture.

The S.A.V.E (Strategies against violence everywhere) has helped Leigh’s family set up the memorial fund. A 16 year old, Columbus based non-profit S.A.V.E has been actively advocating the ever growing and peaceful nonviolent movement which has recently gained popularity in the Columbus community due to the increase in gang presence and gun related incidents. Our future generation is suffering for the over acceptance and encouragement of fire arms we hold so dearly as a national right of freedom.

Little boys are brought, taught and encouraged to play with guns and swords while we dress our daughters up in pink, buy them kitchen sets and baby dolls. Then we wonder why a boy, trained to kill at a fragile developmental stage of growth, could possess the capacity to kill after he spent years manipulating a young girl whose “real dream” of cooking and babies could come true if only she’d marry him. Two young lives full of promise simply cut short.

But at this moment, without looking for blame we move on. At this moment and united as a community, we must educate future generations about the negative effects media can have on them and strive for more productive, positive and proactive ways in dealing with their problems.
Death is hard and life is short. But while we are here on earth, let us spend our time loving each other and working together to create a community that we will be proud to leave the future generations.

ARTIST PROFILES: HOTEL WAR

The White Stripes may have thrown in the towel, but blues-rock has not. This is exceedingly apparent if you ever find yourself in a bar and Hotel War is in the building. Before I ever saw the trio, a friend told me “They’re sort of harder, man. Good harder, though.”

I didn’t know how to feel about such a vague statement. The band I’m in had a gig lined up with Hotel War, so when the night finally came, I took the opportunity to check out their set. That was not the last time I saw them, and their performance last Friday at the Rumba Café won’t be either.

What my friend was trying to say is that they rock hard. Super hard. Building spiraling melodic structures around bluesy, gritty riffs seems to be an area of expertise for them. Think ‘The Black Keys’ meets ‘The White Stripes’ and every band from the 70’s that meant anything at all to rock and roll. Singer Curt Apwisch has the croon of an early Caleb Followill from Kings of Leon, piled on top of mountainous distortion and sweeping guitar riffs.

The EP Hotel War released earlier this year, Rebels Out of Time, provides a great snapshot of their musical direction. It captures their timeless rock and roll attitude perfectly. The opening lyrics even prove it, with Apwisch singing “I feel wild and crazy / I feel so amazing/ wild and young and wasted.”

Hotel War makes a lot of sound for a three-piece, and you won’t soon forget it. Rebels Out of Time is available on a name-your-own-price basis, and it’s highly recommended by us here at Bustown Music that you do go name your price. If you’ve ever listened to rock or blues music in your entire life, you will like this band. It’s impossible not to.

Pecha Kucha: A Deliciously Entertaining meeting of the Minds!

In 2003 Pecha Kucha began in Tokyo, Japan as a networking event for designers. Less than ten years later 455 cities around the world currently hold at least quarterly, if not monthly, Pecha Kucha events - all mirroring that first night in Tokyo. While the name might be tricky to say, the platform is simple: a presenter or performer who has something cool to share explains what they are involved with in 20 seconds, and they present twenty slides for their presentation, 20/20. Now on to the name, go ahead try and say Pecha Kucha. If you aren’t familiar with the Japanese language you might not get it. Try this, say “What’s up wit cha,” and rhyme it with Pecha Kucha. Pecha Kucha (PK) which translates in English to chit chat, is pronounced, pa-cha ka-cha. There you have it and that’s what’s up.

Ponder on the enormity of it for a minute. Imagine if you and your friends decided to plan an event for local people that you find to be noteworthy…cool and in less than 10 years millions of people all over the world took your one little idea and, like wildfire, it spread. The facebook page for PK Columbus has almost 5,000 fans! Multiply that by 455 cities and one guesstimates an average of about 2.3 million fans. It’s pretty amazing what the power of networking and social media can pull off. Columbus PK has one of the strongest followings, this is a testament to the fact that we have grown beyond our boring "cowtown" stereotype.

Columbus PK has emerged as a local favorite for those looking for an alternative evening out. As opposed going to hear music, to a festival, or say networking event at a bar, with PK you get it all in one.

For those of us who bore easily with the mundane, PK events offer variety as the venue and lineup change with each event. Past venues included the Columbus Museum of Art, The Wexner Center, Junctionview and the Eartha Limited Warehouse. Pastperformers included just about every good band or cool person the 614 has to offer including Way Yes, The Wet Darlings, Trisha Dehnbostel, Nick Dekker, and Erin Moore and on and on.

The fall PK was held in November at 400 West Rich Street an old sanitation factory which now houses, allows, and encourages artist to create, perform and have fun.
The inside was transformed into an open meet/mingle space with a stage flanked by makeshift box chairs. Dimly lit, the factory provided a unique, industrialized space that gave way to the creative energy which flowed throughout the building. Tucked away, ‘Abx Art Collective’ set up an incredibly impressive, large, one night composition show; the art was very complimentary and balancing for the space it was provided.

‘Columbus is Funny’ provided the intermission entertainment while the lovely Ginger Lees kicked the event off with their country, folk style and representing Starfish Designs. Dan Mushalko from WOSU was the MC; he carried the night along smoothly with his expressive, endearing personality. All the best foodie trucks were on site, as well as a seasonal bonfire. Reps from the Greater Columbus Arts Council, Ecohouse, a museum historian, librarians, activist,storytellers and a partridge in a pear tree were all on hand to provide a very entertaining night for the crowd.

The organizers have a gift for mixing up locations and presenters- and the event sparks the basic human interest we all have in our world and each other. In our over technological world, PK has given people another outlet beyond their televisions, computer screens, cell phones or pad devices to connect with people in person. It has taken back reality TV and turned newsworthy information in to an actual event.

PK is personifying people to further engage in their community, by presenting a platform which encourages emotional ties. This direct connection will hopefully encourage and inspire people to get more involved in a better future for all of us, one in which were not laughed at by other nations on a continual basis.

The next PK will be this winter, date and location to be decided so keep an eye out. If you’re anything like me, then most networking events make you want to puke; but the PK events pull it off in a very subtle and appealing way. Eating bangin’ food from a truck, drinking free beer (or a soda,but you have to buy that) while listening to entertaining music and hanging outwith nice people are a bonus to the night. And there’s that whole ‘learning something new’ which may eventually lead to growth, that may be worth your while aspect. All in all, Pecha Kucha is well worth it for a Thursday night out in the C.O.

ARTIST PROFILES: THE ALPINE GHOST

In an age where most pop songs are three-minute love songs, there are still those among us who believe in a more engaging musical structure. Alpine Ghost doesn’t simply do what needs to be done and move on. The first thing that struck me about them were their more complex and entertaining song structures. Most of the songs on their6-track EP are well over three minutes, including blissful crescendos and extended solo sections. They’re more like fleshed out compositions rather than the usual short, poppy hit single.

There’s a long list of comparisons that can be made to the self-proclaimed jazz rockers. Not only does Jack Menkedick make the saxcool again, but it also inspires similarities to bands like The Zutons and Morphine.

One person at a recent Alpine Ghost show said they “take ska and obliterate it.”

TAKE A LISTEN!

I personally see a lot of Radiohead in them, and their more aggressive songs can come across like early Modest Mouse tunes. Aggressive is a key word. I’ve never been very interested in harder music, but their faster songs are just a bit punky, not hostile. It’s cool when a band has peaks and valleys at a concert, instead of just playing fast and loud the whole time or quiet and slow. Another aspect of their appeal is their serious musicianship. Any of the members could solo all day if they needed to. The extended sax and guitar solos are a special treat, as not every band can even provide them.

With an exciting live set and solid recordings, Alpine Ghost is doing it right. I’ve had theiralbum playing in my car for something like two or three weeks now. They currently have a number of local performances coming up, and also a trip to Dayton. While there’s certainly no shortage of gigs, I’m most excited about the next time they release an album.

ARTIST PROFILES: DAN WHITE (Between The Lines)

It’s a cool, fall, Saturday evening in Columbus … that usually means the masses are gathered around their televisions, watching their beloved college football games. Alas, a renegade gaggle of music-lovers have packed Dick’s Den for some all-out, knock down, slap-you in the mouth because it’s so funky, jazz.

The night is set to be musically enhanced by local saxophonist Dan White (along with his cast of merrily-music-making-men). All together, there are 6 of them – because according to Mr. White, “Six is better than Four,” and also because it makes it all “more powerful.”

Apparently, the Dude knows what he’s talking about, because as soon as you walk into the Den, there is avast explosion of sound. Fluid, smooth, and yet sporadic jazz compositions –the bass is walking all over the place, the horns are blaring, the drummer is killing it, and the guitar is harmoniously balanced (a rarity at any live show).

The gang has come together to help promote Dan’s new CD, Between the Lines. The tracks were recorded and produced in New York City, but the sound is more worldly than ever with crazy calypso and bossa nova beats and rhythms.And you can call me crazy, but I’m pretty sure at one point during the night, I heard a wicked jazz cover of ‘Lithium’ … ya, as in – by Nirvana.

I have to admit, I kind of lost it when Jon Lampley [trumpet] pulled out a sousaphone(pretty much out of nowhere), and laid down a nasty ass bass hook. After letting everyone soak it in for a few measures, the rest of the band busted into the action, and just devastated everyone with absolute live funk. It was nasty.

This group of schoolmates created enormous and fantastical sounds that kept the crowd moving all night. Even if you might not consider yourself a “fan” of “jazz,” you should still check out Dan White, his new CD ( Between the Lines) and the guys he was playing with (conveniently listed below) – because good music, and I mean Good Music, is undeniable.
